Remembering Photographer Pedro E. Guerrero
We are remembering Pedro E. Guerreo, photographer, who died last week at the age of 95. He is best known for capturing on film the early 20th century homes and buildings of modernist architect Frank Lloyd Wright.
Guerrero studied photography rather by chance, at what is now the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. He had wanted to go to the school to be with his brother, and to get out of Arizona, but happened upon an open photography class.
He never graduated, but sought out modernist architect Frank Lloyd Wright in 1939, after seeing his groundbreaking Fallingwater House, and at age 22 Guerreo became the exclusive photographer of Frank Lloyd Wright’s work. The two began a friendship that lasted over 20 years, until Wright's death.
Guerreo was as gregarious and witty as Frank Lloyd Wright was quiet and introspective, but the two shared an artistic devotion to clean lines and simple elegance. “I approached his work like sculpture,” said Guerrero.
That suited Wright just fine. Us too.
